Back to the 80s: A is for A-ha.

A-haA few months ago, I was considering taking part in the A-Z Challenge for the first time. In the end, I didn’t take up the challenge, however, I did come up with a theme. As some of my stories are set during the 1980s, I thought it would be fun to challenge myself in coming up with names of bands popular during that time (and some letters in the alphabet were quite a challenge).

Starting this month, I’ll begin with the letter A and post each consecutive letter once a month. I’ll be focusing on one particular band each month, with a video of one of their songs.

A Norwegian band, A-ha were formed in 1982 and achieved their biggest success in 1985. The song ‘Take On Me’ became an international No.1 hit, and the music video was ahead of its time, winning six awards at the MTV video awards in 1986. Their second single ‘The Sun Always Shines On TV’ was also a success, and the video became another award winner. In total, the band released three albums during the 1980s. In 1994, the band had a break, only to reunite in 1998. The band split after a world wide concert in 2010.

Other bands formed or who had hits in the 1980s starting with the letter A include:- ABC, AC/DC, Australian Crawl, Adam and the Ants, A Flock of Seagulls, Aerosmith.

What other bands of the 1980s that begin with the letter A can you think of? Have you ever taken part in the A-Z Challenge?

Can NOT go past A-Ha! They were the be all and end all for me. Concerts, personal encounters, a room wall-papered in their images – there weren’t any other bands in the 80s, were there?! 😀 Thanks for bringing up a beautiful past Debbie!

LOL Dimity! Personal encounters sure sounds interesting. Of-course it will be a while before I get to my all time favourite band. 😉 It’s good to hear from you Dimity – glad you enjoyed it.

  2. “Take On Me” was a wonderful song which I recall very distinctly on first release – I remember being blown away by the video, with all that rotoscoping. Wonderful stuff. Not something I’d have expected from Norway (I have visions of the place being filled up with musicians steeped in Grieg and Tolkien who write 28-minute orchestral-prog numbers filled with vocal growls, screeching sopranos and brutally loud heavy metal…)

Hi Matthew. I too, was blown away by the video at the time. It was cleverly done and I still enjoy watching it (and listening to it). As you say, it’s not what one would expect coming out of Norway. 😉

  3. I was born in 1980 and it was awesome I remember listening to Def Leppard.

Savannah you young whippersnapper, you’re making me feel old! You were lucky to be born in the 80s. 🙂

  4. This song snaps us all back in an instant, right? Thanks so much for posting!

Hi acherrix. This song certainly does take you back, with that distinct 80s sound. Never could reach those high notes! Thanks for stopping by.
